NYC Taxi Commission Proposes Complete Cell Ban for Drivers
Oct 20, 2009, 9:09 AM by Eric M. Zeman
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission is proposing sweeping changes to policies regarding cell phone use by NYC cab drivers. The proposed changes include a heavier fine fir first offense, 30-day suspension on second offense and the possibility of losing their taxi license if a driver reaches three strikes within 15 months. The proposal would completely ban the use of handheld devices and cell phones — even with handsfree kits — while the taxis are in motion. Cell phone use would only be allowed when taxis are parked. The commission is weighing public comment on the matter and will vote on the new rules and put them into place before the end of 2009.

They're also mandated to work ...

Its alright, I'm a limo driver
I have to honestly say this is bad for their busniness, but I do understand the driving aspect as well. Since I called my regulars so often I would have to say it would hurt my business to not be able to reach them as well. I'm against this, sorry New York.
Cash CAB>?
isn't the Taxi Commission a Mafia front? They become a "Commission" by breaking knees and shooting up houses, right?
I still think it's a bad law.. talking on the phone isn't what makes it dangerous.. its finding it to answer it.. dialing.. etc..

Legit Question...
Are they still able to use the 2Way radio built into the dashboard? because that is just as dangerous as using a cellphone, worse actually if they have to change channels because their eyes are completely off the road!!!
