Researchers Make Lithium-Ion Batteries Safer

Researchers from Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute have developed a new material that will make lithium-ion batteries safer to use in today's electronic devices. Li-ion batters are used in mobile phones, and there have been some instances where batteries overheated and caused fires and/or injuries. The cause of these fires is batteries that short circuit, most often due to damage. To prevent li-ion batteries from short circuiting, the researchers created a new polymer, called STOBA (self-terminated oligomers with hyper-branched architecture). This polymer is applied to the cathode material inside a li-on battery, which prevents the battery from short circuiting if it is damaged. The researchers say the material will add only 2% or 3% to the cost to manufacture the battery. The researchers say the material is ready for use, though no battery makers have publicly committed to using it.

what a waste of time!

instead of research on making battery last longer, all they can do is make it safer??
how often do you get batteries to explode or a fire?
Yeah, let's ignore safety so you can text message longer. Good job being idiotic. 🙄

"How often do you get batteries to explode or fire"? you ask.

I suppose only once because you would probably end up burning up with it. :-)

Although I've never had a full out battery explosion, I have had some overheat on me. So I would welcome any type of technology improvements that prevent lithium ion battery overheating/explosions. But in the same light, and as stated in these posts...

This isn't just for cell phones but laptops as well. And see the cool thing is just because one group is working on making them safer doesn't mean there isn't another group working on making them last longer. Your thinking is simple, you need to see...

So they Won't Blow up in iPhones???

Haha!! Yeah, instead of safer, longer... they need to develop longer lasting batteries. Eveything in the technological world improves by leaps and bounds, but batteries hardley do... research that!
Why would they make phones that can do everything. and give us batterys that don't even last very long if you using email and txt messages and IM. This is stupid come on people in Japan come out with something better worry about safty later
