Today MetroPCS announced the technology vendors that will be supplying its Long Term Evolution networking equipment. Ericsson will be supplying wireless network technology and Samsung will supply MetroPCS' first LTE handset. MetroPCS expects to launch a dual-mode CDMA/LTE smartphone in its major metropolitan markets near the end of 2010, which is when it is scheduled to initiate service on its LTE network. Neither MetroPCS nor Samsung said what operating system the CDMA/LTE smartphone would use. Further, MetroPCS confirmed for Phone Scoop that it plans to offer voice services over LTE via VoIP technology. MetroPCS said it is still working with vendors to arrange exactly how that will play out. MetroPCS also confirmed that it expects to use PCS, AWS and 700MHz spectrum in the future and possibly others, as needed, for roaming. MetroPCS did not say that it actually owns 700MHz spectrum.

small coverage

MetroPCS is doing what DSL did, only build out in major areas. They can go cheap, expand fast and get a majority of ppl. Sure they aren't everywhere but what does that matter if you never leave the metro area?

Long term this could be a winning angle. I wish I had thought of it. This has to be the only way to grow and stay in business. Mark my words, MetroPCS is here to stay and they can grow, that is the hardest thing to do when your competition has 30 years advantage on you.
Potential for success does not secure success. It simulates a illusion of prosperity. I agree that Metro has room to grow but grow to what extent is questionable at the least. Metro, Cricket, Tracfone and even Virgin Mobile had/have potential but agai...

Yet another carrier that will have LTE before ATT!!!

Seems as though in the next 18 months ATT is going to be more, and more behind! ATT's lack of ambition sucks!
...um...I'd love to know exactly how many towers MetroPCS has compared to AT&T. Chances are, Metro PCS will be piggy backing on everyone else's network in their roaming agreements. AT&T is a national carrier. It's a little harder to upgrade that entir...

I think instead of Sprint, Tblow should joinn forces with ATT. They could have 2G, no in building coverage, no rural coverage together!!! 😛

Interesting concept

for a company that doesn't have its own network and piggy-backs off of everyone else and offers the ****tiest phones and devices...
Metro does have it's own network.
First of all get your facts right before you come online and post your asinine comments. They are NOT an MVNO and they do have their own network.
...
Wow! Metro does have its own network. They also have a roaming agreement with Leap (Cricket).

This could be interesting

This could really make them a contender in cities now for business and tech people, especially with the planned launch of a smartphone that early. I wonder what the plans will be like.

I take it they are using the same LTE tech that Verizon is going towards? or are they developing their own system?
LTE is a standard.

Duel Mode Only

Vegas, Boston, NYC, Philly

Just some of the markets that WILL NOT have
LTE.
So they will have LTE in AWS markets as confirmed by phonescoop BUT this phone is
still only dual mode. So it will not work
in AWS markets regardless.
Why do you say Vegas won't have LTE from Metro?
