Today the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 approved a set of standards for CDMA 1x Advanced. The software/channel card upgrade uses interference cancellation and radio link enhancements to increase voice capacity on CDMA 1x networks. According to the CDMA Development Group, the technology improvements (base transceiver station interference cancellation, improved power control, early frame termination, and smart blanking) can be rolled out all at once or deployed in phases across a network. In theory, 1x Advanced can quadruple the voice capacity of a wireless network using the same 1.25MHz of spectrum. The technology will be available in the second half of 2010. Additionally, an upgrade for devices, called 1X Voice and EVDO Data (SVDO), will allow phones to access EVDO data while on a 1x-based voice call. This will let end users send emails or surf the web while on a phone call.
