Today at its own developer conference, Verizon Wireless shared a number of details about its upcoming VCAST apps store and partnerships with Qualcomm, Research In Motion, and Microsoft. Verizon noted that it does not want to compete with RIM and Microsoft's own app stores, and will work so that they all compliment one another. Specifically, it is partnering with RIM, and will work to cross-promote apps that are available in both the BlackBerry Apps World and Verizon's VCAST Apps Store. Verizon is looking for developers to create both on-device and in-browser applications for its phones. It is providing developers with tools such as location APIs to help take advantage of all that phones have to offer. Billing issues are still being worked out, but Verizon's goal is to provide users with a "one-click" experience. Developers that create apps for the VCAST store will have access to Verizon's billing systems and marketing. Verizon will not charge developers to submit applications, and will split revenue 70% for the developer and 30% for Verizon. Verizon hopes that the submission and approval process will take no longer than 14 days. Verizon also took the time to reiterate its commitment to Qualcomm's BREW platform for feature phones. It will offer BREW developers an open catalog that simplifies certification and on-boarding processes. It will also support free applications and speed up the time it takes to get apps to market. The VCAST apps store is expected to launch in the fourth quarter.
