Google: Android to Become More Social

Speaking at an event in San Francisco, Google's Andy Rubin (chief architect of Android) made sure to spell out the differences between Google's recently announced Chrome OS for netbooks and the Android mobile operating system. "Chrome has a very Web-centric view of the world. There are different problems to be solved in different categories of consumer products. You need different technology for different solutions." He pointed out that Android needs to do things such as manage battery life an keep calls connected as phones switch from cell to cell. Rubin also said that more versions of Android are on the way, with the codenames "Donut," "Eclair" and "Flan" on deck. Some of the new features will be better integration with social networking services, such as Facebook. Rubin noted, "Social is a big push for now." Google is also working to bring more billing methods to the Android Market, which should entice more developers to create applications for the burgeoning mobile platform.
