Qualcomm Widens Application Delivery to More Platforms

Today Qualcomm announced Plaza Retail, a new app store framework through which wireless network operators and their developer partners can host and sell mobile applications and other content. Rather than targeting a single platform or device, such as the Android Market for Android phones and the iPhone Apps Store for the iPhone, retail plaza will support most mobile platforms. More than just BREW, Plaza Retail will support applications written for Java, Flash and BlackBerry OS, with planned support for Android, Windows Mobile, Palm's webOS, Symbian, and LiMo Linux. It will give developers a much larger delivery platform to market and sell applications. Plaza Retail will support carrier branding, so Qualcomm partners such as Verizon Wireless or U.S. Cellular can customize the stores and offerings to make them unique for their subscribers. Qualcomm said Plaza Retail should be up and running later this year.
