Samsung Creating MEMS-Based Shutter for Camera Phones

Samsung is working on new shutter technology that could be used in future mobile phones with high-quality megapixel cameras in them. Mechanical shutters are often too large and expensive for compact phones. Using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, Samsung has created a new shutter that measures just 2.2mm. It works by quickly forming a thin film over a glass surface, effectively blocking light and acting as a shutter. The technology could lead to improvements in the quality of images captured with mobile phones. The technology was presented at a conference, but no time frame for its use in consumer products was given.
