Today Acer launched a series of smartphones for Asian markets and also announced its intent to become a large player in the worldwide phone industry. Aymar de Lencquesaing, Acer's head of mobile-phone products, said that the company wants to be the fifth-largest handset maker in the world by 2012. While no specific devices were announced, de Lencquesaing also noted that Acer will likely ship a phone based on Google's Android platform before the end of 2009. The company believes it can reach its goal if it can attain yearly sales of 20 to 25 million devices.

Very aggressive goal...However,

It will take an enormous measure of marketing to achieve these goals. Acer is is a key player in PCs but to break into an already saturated smartphone arena, they will need to heavily grab the minds of the world population to show interest in their devices.

They will have to implement something more innovative. Possibly more processing power, more memory. More of a PC experience without a PC. If not, they are just delivering another smartphone device.
