Nation's Capital to Be Free Mobile TV Test Bed

A handful of television broadcasters in the Washington, D.C., area are set to announce a trial of free mobile broadcasts that will let devices such as cell phones and laptops view local DTV broadcasts. The signals, which will be identical to those broadcast to regular televisions, will launch over the summer. The networks participating include CBS, NBC, PBS, Ion and a local FOX-owned station. The broadcasters haven't said exactly what types of devices will be supported. Most of today's cell phones don't have the necessary receiver built in. AT&T and Verizon Wireless already use Qualcomm's MediaFLO technology to provide mobile TV content to phones. Both require subscriptions. The networks have indicated that they will expand to another score of major markets by the end of 2009, covering 39% of households in the U.S.
