Today Skype announced that it is bringing the power of its VoIP-enabled Internet calling service to the iPhone and BlackBerry platforms. The Skype iPhone application will be free to download, and will permit free Skype-to-Skype calls. Calls to standard phone lines will incur charges. It will integrate with the iPhone's contact list, negating the need to manage a separate contact list for Skype numbers. The application will be available March 31. The application for the BlackBerry platform will work in a similar fashion, though it won't be available until some time in May. Skype said it is also considering the possibility of enabling video calling via the iPhone and BlackBerry, as well.
