Symbian Unveils Platform Release Schedule

Symbian has released information on the development schedule and planned availability of future versions of the mobile operating system. Right now, it is working on Symbian^2, which is based on S60 5th Edition. Symbian expects Symbian^2 to be "functionally complete" by the middle of 2009 and "hardened" by the end of 2009. Hardened means devices should be available at that time. It is also working on Symbian^3, which should be complete by the end of 2009 and hardened by the middle of 2010. Symbian^4 and later versions are also already in the works. Symbian will deliver only those features to each successive release that are stable and meet the planned release schedule. The goal is one release each six months. Each version of Symbian will receive .X updates for a period of 12 months following its release to fix bugs. According to the Symbian Blog, the feature set for Symbian^2 is already complete and most of the content for Symbian^3 is already agreed, but there's still some room for change. Symbian^4 and later releases are far from complete and more open to new features and functions.
