Report: Sprint Gauging LTE

According to sources cited by GigaOm, Sprint has been evaluating Long Term Evolution networking technology. Spokesman John Polivka said in an email to GigaOm, "You know of our commitment to WiMAX as our 4G play, the only next gen technology commercially offered. … As a prudent Technology Development organization we are always collecting competitive information about various technologies/equipment to monitor and assess the competitive landscape and any potential impacts to Sprint’s plans." Sprint and partner Clearwire are currently building out WiMax as their next-generation network. This statement does not mean that Sprint is going to dump WiMax in favor of LTE, but it leaves open the possibility that Sprint may consider it more seriously in the future.

This is good strategy that was expected.

Sprint has wanted to be first out of the gate with 4G. This position validates that goal. Since WiMax is very similar to LTE, Sprint has also strategically placed themselves in the position of switching to LTE in plenty of time if needed giving them very competitive leverage for a great footprint in 4G with either technology. I commend Sprint in this strategy.

My interest however, has always been towards WiMax for the pure aspect of choice and hope this may remain the case.
Exactly, plus, I think WiMAX could very easily be used for one thing and LTE for another. If Sprint continues to own most of Clearwire, they could choose to gear that service to a niche customer base. Basically tell them, hey, this is a alternative to...

WiMax is already here so why not use it. Maybe WiMax can provide 4g service to customers who want it now and dont wanna wait years for LTE. Also they may both find a niche So WiMax can coexist with LTE. With all the technology that will be using WiMax...

Im definately not a Sprint fan but I think it would be a great idea for them to choose LTE instead of WiMax. Sprint is the only carrier so far that has choosen wimax.. This can come back and criple them if its not deployed correctly. They will not hav...

Get both networks

They have the spectrum
But do they have 700mhz spectrum??? The whole world will be on the 700 band 3yrs from now. As far as I know, Sprint doesn't own any 700 licenses.

I don't think they even have the money to invest in LTE. Right now WiMax are building it cable companies that are involved in the deal so sprint isn't really laying out money from their pocket...and besides they're thinking about throwing money to fi...

Very old news.

Sprint has been saying for years they will support either format. LTE was never out of the question. So good for them to follow up on Verison's announcement. 🙂
