Kyocera Reorganizes Handset Businesses

Kyocera announced that it is making changes to its U.S. handset businesses. It will be combining its Kyocera Wireless unit with its Sanyo Telecom unit, and in the process will eliminate about 360 jobs. According to company spokesperson John Chier, "KWC in San Diego will still design the phones for the Americas. What's moving to Japan is most of the development of those product designs. [Kyocera] will keep some of the engineering [in the U.S.], but most will be consolidated in Japan. Once the products are finished being developed, KWC will still have an engineering/technical team in San Diego that will work with [Kyocera's] customers on product testing, application and software/firmware support, and working with the carrier labs." The workers who remain in the U.S. will focus on sales, customer service and support. Kyocera believes that the combined businesses will be better able to compete in today's market. Kyocera bought Sanyo's handset business in April 2008.
