Today Palm announced its next-generation smartphone, the Pre. It is a touch-based phone, that has a 3.1-inch display with 320 x 480 resolution. It has EVDO Rev. A for connectivity, as well as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with stereo support. It has 8GB of on-board storage, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, replaceable battery, and 3.5mm headset jack. It comes with a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash. Palm also introduced its next-generation mobile platform, called webOS. It includes gesture-based input for interacting with the device. The Pre will be launched on the Sprint network in the first half of 2009. Palm later confirmed that it is also working on a WCDMA version of the Pre, though it didn't say when or where it would be made available.

Infra-red port?

Does anyone know if this phone will have an infrared port? I didn't see it listed on the specs on Palm's site, but I can't imagine a Palm phone not having one, especially with such a large realtor userbase.

Infrared became irrelevant a LONG time ago. Bluetooth has completely replaced it.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what hardware do realtors use that requires infrared? Key boxes? I'm sure a Bluetooth version exists, or will shortly.

Palm quality issues

Nobody seems to be concerned that palm has had horrible quality issues, weak and overly complicated support website, and lousy customer service on the phone. I don't imagine they will be able to fix whats broken about their company just because of a new os.
Has it crossed your mind that maybe the folks Palm recently laid off were the dead weight? Also, to my understanding their will be a new support group from Palm and Sprint that will be specific to the Pre.

Sprint? are you kidding me?

why launch it for such a lame carrier when the phone supports VZW and its 78 million potential buyers.
My guess is they wanted to release a phone the way it was originally designed. If VZW got if first they would have to pull WiFi and drop the processor down a few notches. At least you can buy one outright and see if VZW will activate it with the "An...

1) Sprint users are clamoring for a decent phone

2) Sprint is the best way to access Verizon's network.

3) Verizon wasted its "special phone" card on the Storm.
...
I'm going to say because Verizon likes to strip everything down to the bare minimum and with this new OS on it I doubt Palm wants that to happen. Verizon gives phones a bad rep. That's why phones like the Touch Pro have crap reviews.

well we all know Sprints plans give you more and a cheapee than Verizon & ATT. Plus Sprints 3G Network is the best. Why such the suprise then? lol

It's actually the perfect situation for both. Think about it, you have two struggling companies, both are pretty much down to their last licks.

Palm will have much more control of the final specs of the device because Sprint needs this phone in t...

yes they are kidding. You busted them with your hating. It's just a big early april fools joke. They are actually going to put it on verizon's lineup and let VZW cripple the phone to the point where the might as well be using a V3.
this whole thing always goes into bashing a company instead of talking about the phone OK maybe sprint doesn't have 100,000 phones like att or verizon but they have powerhouse phones and sense most of sprint customers are biz cast's look into for your...

Is there an on-screen keyboard pre-loaded on the phone? If not what's the call on installing a third party one?

Phone????

I watched the video of the Vegas demo. They never just used it as a phone! They didn't demo dialing a number.

Sure I can call from contacts but for the numbers I call frequently, dialing is faster. I've had a Treo 650 with touchscreen dialing and the qwerty keyboard. They're both lousy.

Why should I be optimistic about this?
Well for starters the Treo 650 and the Palm Pre are not running the same OS, the Pre is running a new built from the ground up OS designed by Linux. There are several videos floating around the Net that show the dialing capabilities.

Valid points.

If this is a half baked effort and it doesn't live up to what it is on paper it will fail along with the company probably.

There is a hungry market out there for smartphones, and if they did it right it will be a great seller 😁
Really? I don't know anyone's number. I don't even know my mom's number. Why would I? It's all in my contacts. I use the dialer maybe once a week, only to dial companies I don't call regularly. (800 numbers, etc.)

But that's just me. 😉

The Pre Is Running Linux

That makes since, at a Webinar this past summer an official from Sprint said they will be running a Linux based device second quarter 2009 at the latest. For you ATT customer wanting this you will have to buy the unlocked GSM Euro version, Palm is not making plans for a GSM American version. That means $$$$ unless you jump over to Sprint which would make since due to the fact ATT charges an arm & a leg!
Here is an article which shows the GSM version will be a world version:

Mac Friendly??? Anyone know???

Does anyone know if this little bad boy plays nice with Macs?
I don't think there's anything out mentioning that yet. To me, it looks like it's just going to sync with Gmail, Facebook, Outlook, and Exchange accounts, which are not Mac dependent.

I emailed MarkSpace and asked if there were any plans to crea...

Finally!!!!!

Finally, Palm is coming back with a real phone again. I really loved my Palm 700. But we have been plagued with awful devices such as the mogul, touch, instinct. I was beginning to think sprint did not care what its user wanted anymore. The phone looks great and sharp. Can't wait to trade in my dreadful insticnt, for this one. I believe both Palm and Sprint really need this!!!
instinct im soooooo sorry you have that phone i traded mine in for a centro then got the htc pro will def jump on the pre when its out though

Weep, weep for the dear departed Foleo, dead for the Pre's sake!

Good riddance!

Palm looks like they really put their energy into an amazing device. And if the new OS works in the real world as well as the reviews are saying, Palm may regain their former place in the PDA marketshare.

So... who thinks Palm will also put out an Android phone?
I would like to see Android Palm but doubt it happens. WinMo 7 is more likley but they saw they want to cut down on the amount of WinMo phones out there. I think Palm is going to roll with WebOS. If they add Flash, virtual keyboard, video recording,...

HANDS ON VIDEOS!

i think that palm has a very competitive phone here. This interface is very sexy and flows well, judging by the hands on videos! 😎 It should be able to compete with any other phone on the market currently if Sprint and palm can get advertisement down, and create a good app store to keep people with the device.

True, lets hope that they come up with something before the phone gets released
WOW...those vids were very impressive for a pre-production model! I'm pretty sure I've found my next device, and will happily return to Sprint to get it!

I'm excited... 😎
Sprint they also need to make sure they have enough of a supply available to get it out to their stores. including the affiliate dealer stores.

has anyone tested the webOS?

how good is it? apart from full-touch, has it got some other sexy features, like iphone did when they showed the zooming? Does anyone know what Phone Scoop means by "gesture-based input for interacting with the device"?
Yes, it does all of the slick touch and multi-touch stuff the iPhone does, plus some neat stuff with the touch area below the display. More hands-on impressions here:

Office Docs/Attachments?

Does anyone know if you can open attachments with this device? You would think that it would come standard with any PDA nowadays but I didn't see anything mentioned anywhere. Does anyone have any info? I sure hope we don't have to pay extra for a download...
Yes, out of the box, it can view Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files.

good choice

According to the most extensive 3g network test across the country by Gizmodo Sprints is the best. That coupled with the best overall plans that allow you to do everrrrrrything your device can do + saving hundreds over att and verizon... plus Sprint wont short any of the features on the device.
It is the only logical choice.

I do believe though that Sprint and Palm must without fail, extensively market this device. This could be Palms last chance at taking a stab at the market and Sprint's really great chance at pushing one of their clo...

What an uninspired, ugly piece of hardware. If this is the future of Palm, they're doomed.

What a stupid name....

But beyond that this looks like one helluva device from what appears to be the only other company that 'gets it' from a hardware and software perspective.* Never thought I'd see another compelling Palm device, but this looks like it can stand tall with the iPhone.

I especially appreciate the fact they obviously ganked what works with the iPhone and then tried to improve on what didn't. We'll see how it all works in real life, but rather than just focus on a gimmick (see Blackberry Storm) and spit out some sloppy execution, they're actually bringing some interesting ideas to the table.

Kudos to Palm. Now fix the name.

*If Android ever sees decent hardware, it can be admitted to the exclusive club.
with a name like pre, palm wanted it to be unique so itll stand out againt all the other touch phones, ya its a dumb name but you'll remember it. 😉
