Palm Announces the Pre

Today Palm announced its next-generation smartphone, the Pre. It is a touch-based phone, that has a 3.1-inch display with 320 x 480 resolution. It has EVDO Rev. A for connectivity, as well as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with stereo support. It has 8GB of on-board storage, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, replaceable battery, and 3.5mm headset jack. It comes with a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash. Palm also introduced its next-generation mobile platform, called webOS. It includes gesture-based input for interacting with the device. The Pre will be launched on the Sprint network in the first half of 2009. Palm later confirmed that it is also working on a WCDMA version of the Pre, though it didn't say when or where it would be made available.

Infra-red port?
Does anyone know if this phone will have an infrared port? I didn't see it listed on the specs on Palm's site, but I can't imagine a Palm phone not having one, especially with such a large realtor userbase.

Infrared became irrelevant a LONG time ago. Bluetooth has completely replaced it.
Please pardon my ignorance, but what hardware do realtors use that requires infrared? Key boxes? I'm sure a Bluetooth version exists, or will shortly.

Palm quality issues
Nobody seems to be concerned that palm has had horrible quality issues, weak and overly complicated support website, and lousy customer service on the phone. I don't imagine they will be able to fix whats broken about their company just because of a new os.
Has it crossed your mind that maybe the folks Palm recently laid off were the dead weight? Also, to my understanding their will be a new support group from Palm and Sprint that will be specific to the Pre.

My guess is they wanted to release a phone the way it was originally designed. If VZW got if first they would have to pull WiFi and drop the processor down a few notches. At least you can buy one outright and see if VZW will activate it with the "An...

I'm going to say because Verizon likes to strip everything down to the bare minimum and with this new OS on it I doubt Palm wants that to happen. Verizon gives phones a bad rep. That's why phones like the Touch Pro have crap reviews.

Keyboard
Is there an on-screen keyboard pre-loaded on the phone? If not what's the call on installing a third party one?

I watched the video of the Vegas demo. They never just used it as a phone! They didn't demo dialing a number.
Sure I can call from contacts but for the numbers I call frequently, dialing is faster. I've had a Treo 650 with touchscreen dialing and the qwerty keyboard. They're both lousy.

Well for starters the Treo 650 and the Palm Pre are not running the same OS, the Pre is running a new built from the ground up OS designed by Linux. There are several videos floating around the Net that show the dialing capabilities.

Really? I don't know anyone's number. I don't even know my mom's number. Why would I? It's all in my contacts. I use the dialer maybe once a week, only to dial companies I don't call regularly. (800 numbers, etc.)

The Pre Is Running Linux
That makes since, at a Webinar this past summer an official from Sprint said they will be running a Linux based device second quarter 2009 at the latest. For you ATT customer wanting this you will have to buy the unlocked GSM Euro version, Palm is not making plans for a GSM American version. That means $$$$ unless you jump over to Sprint which would make since due to the fact ATT charges an arm & a leg!

Finally!!!!!
Finally, Palm is coming back with a real phone again. I really loved my Palm 700. But we have been plagued with awful devices such as the mogul, touch, instinct. I was beginning to think sprint did not care what its user wanted anymore. The phone looks great and sharp. Can't wait to trade in my dreadful insticnt, for this one. I believe both Palm and Sprint really need this!!!

i think that palm has a very competitive phone here. This interface is very sexy and flows well, judging by the hands on videos! 😎 It should be able to compete with any other phone on the market currently if Sprint and palm can get advertisement down, and create a good app store to keep people with the device.

Does anyone know if you can open attachments with this device? You would think that it would come standard with any PDA nowadays but I didn't see anything mentioned anywhere. Does anyone have any info? I sure hope we don't have to pay extra for a download...

According to the most extensive 3g network test across the country by Gizmodo Sprints is the best. That coupled with the best overall plans that allow you to do everrrrrrything your device can do + saving hundreds over att and verizon... plus Sprint wont short any of the features on the device.
It is the only logical choice.
I do believe though that Sprint and Palm must without fail, extensively market this device. This could be Palms last chance at taking a stab at the market and Sprint's really great chance at pushing one of their clo...

But beyond that this looks like one helluva device from what appears to be the only other company that 'gets it' from a hardware and software perspective.* Never thought I'd see another compelling Palm device, but this looks like it can stand tall with the iPhone.
I especially appreciate the fact they obviously ganked what works with the iPhone and then tried to improve on what didn't. We'll see how it all works in real life, but rather than just focus on a gimmick (see Blackberry Storm) and spit out some sloppy execution, they're actually bringing some interesting ideas to the table.
