Novatel announced a new product it calls MiFi. The MiFi is a wireless modem that will be provisioned and sold through wireless network operators. It will connect to the Internet via the carriers' 3G data networks and then allow multiple other devices to connect to it via Wi-Fi. The MiFi is very small and has a rechargeable battery that can last on standby for 40 hours and provide for 4 hours of continuous use. Other vendors offer similar products, but the MiFi is among the smallest. It will be available in early 2009 and will cost $200 before carrier subsidies.
