UIQ Puts Staff On Notice for Dismissal, May Close Shop

In the wake of Nokia's outright purchase of Symbian and the formation of the Symbian Foundation, it has left other Symbian-based organizations, such as UIQ, in limbo. UIQ's board met last week, and, given the uncertain future facing the mobile operating system, has notified its employees that the company will likely be shut down. For now, UIQ is being funded on a month-by-month basis by parent Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson is actively pursuing options for the future of UIQ, but has not made any final decisions.
