The Department of Justice has approved Verizon Wireless's purchase of Alltel as long as Verizon agrees to divest 100 markets in 22 different states. The divestitures cover North Dakota and South Dakota in their entirety, significant swaths of Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Montana, South Carolina, Utah and Wyoming, and smaller portions of Alabama, Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. The FCC still has to approve the acquisition, and is voting on the matter next week.
