The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Motorola is set to make major changes to its mobile phone business. Motorola plans to layoff thousands of employees, simplify phone development processes, and focus the efforts of its mid-range devices on the Android platform. Motorola will continue to build higher-end Windows Mobile smartphones, but will seek to outsource some of the production of those phones. Motorola will continue to use its own platform for lower-tier phones. Motorola is expected to make an announcement as early as Thursday, when it reports its quarterly earnings.
