MetroPCS and Leap Sign Roaming, Spectrum Deal

Today Leap Wireless and MetroPCS announced a major partnership that ties together a new 10-year roaming agreement, spectrum swap, and ends some litigation between the two companies. Both companies use CDMA technology and have been unable to get roaming agreements with Alltel, Sprint or Verizon Wireless that they consider fair. So the two decided to work with one another to increase roaming capabilities of their respective customers. The deal will offer Leap and MetroPCS customers the ability to roam onto the others' network for more reasonable rates. The spectrum swap will have Leap obtaining 10 MHz from MetroPCS in San Diego and Fresno, Calif., Seattle, and portions of Washington and Oregon states. In return, MetroPCS will acquire 10 MHz from Leap in Dallas/Ft Worth, Shreveport-Bossier City, La. and Lakeland-Winter Haven, Fla. Lastly, the two companies announced a new cross-licensing agreement which will end litigation the companies had been pursuing. Financial terms of all the deals were not disclosed.
