Today Google offered web developers a new API that can be used to make web sites location aware. This means that if you navigate to a web site on your mobile phone, the web site will use cell tower or GPS information to determine your location, which will result in more relevant search results. The Gears Geolocation API technology provides the same functionality to desktop PCs using IP address information. Right now, the Gears software only works on Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile phones. Google will work to provide the functionality to other platforms over time.
