Analog Networks to Go Dark On Monday

Monday, February 18, the FCC will allow wireless network operators to shut down their old analog networks. These networks, built in the 1980s and called Advanced Mobile Phone Systems (AMPS) were some of the first used in the U.S. Network operators can also turn off their first-generation TDMA digital networks. Verizon Wireless and AT&T plan to shut their analog networks down on the 18th. The number of AMPS and TDMA users is low, so most wireless costumers will be unaffected. Other, regional network operators will likely turn their analog networks off as well.

I have a deactive Sprint phone with analog capability, and Verizon is the preferred roaming partner here in San Francisco, and it is not deactive yet.

So, Im checking every few hours to see if Verizon kills Analog here.

I heard that OnStar and ADT would be affected...

I heard that OnStar and ADT alarm systems would be affected by this as some of their services still used the AMPS technology but I'm sure they've taken measures to avoid issues. They have enough time after all.

I believe [analog] OnStar customers are SOL here. Service is going away and they cannot upgrade ☹️
