Sprint Slashes Jobs As Part of Cost-Cutting Actions

After releasing disappointing fourth quarter results, Sprint said it is taking drastic steps to cut costs and save money as it continues to struggle with retaining customers. Sprint lost 683,000 post-paid and 202,000 pre-paid customers in the fourth quarter. In response, Sprint will cut 4,000 jobs, including management and non-management positions, as well as close 125--or 8 percent--of company owned retail stores. It will also get rid of some 4,000 third-party distribution points. It expects these actions to save the company about $800 million per year. The lay offs will take place during the first half of 2008.

Look In The Mirror

The only jobs that need to be slashed are the ones in the corporate office. After all it's all those wonderful decisions by Gary Forsee and company that landed Sprint in this mess it's in now. They never should have bought Nextel and despite what some have said on this forum it was a decently run company prior to the merger. A lot of decent hard working people with bills to pay will be laid off without one thought whatsoever from corporate. Mark my words Sprint is finished. It's not a question of if but when.
I totally agree 🙂

i wonder

why is sprint the carrier with the most unsatisfied customers? i'm sure other carriers have their share of problems but it seems like all i ever hear is how sprint is the bad guy. i guess the combination of bad billing, outsourcing, and ignorant customers is whats sinking the ship. any thoughts?
LOL definately ignorant customers who never like to pay their full bill and expects the world to be laid at their feet.

" I know my bill is $1,700 But how much is the minimum I can put down to turn it back on?

" Oh twenty dollars okay I'm going ...

WiMax Dead???

Could this spell the end for WiMax? The data geared Sprintspeed commercials are not effective and Sprint posts another tragic quarter. My guess is that shareholders are going to be screaming for less spending on WiMax and look to Sprint to clean up Customer Service and work on their Postpaid subscribers losses.
it'd be logical to call off WiMax for now and work on the inner core of service. i think that might actually make it/break it for sprint, if they try and lauch it as a win-back promo, with failing numbers then they are done for. but they might have a ...

Sprint only one to outsource?

I have ATT and when I call with a problem I get an American so there are no problems with communicating. Does Verizon outsource?
Sorry but ATT does outsource.....
I have been with Verizon for the last year or so, and when I have called, I have had no problems with understanding the customer service personnel. I have talked with people in the Knoxville and Omaha calling centers. 🙂

Wireless carriers are not the only companies that outsource. Think about it like this, these big companies are about saving as much money as they can so they figure by saving a bit of cash why pay Americans who want more than $10 bux an hour to work w...

The p[roblem is...

I have been with Sprint sales for 3 years. I have noticed that customers of Sprint are for the most part going to cancel no matter if you help them or not. I have customers that come in thinking I am on their side when they bad mouth the company I work for to my face. Right away I shut down and do not want to help that person. They make their threats that they will cancel no matter what. So should I give this customer company money if it were their fault for letting their kids go nuts downloading content and purchasing ring tones etc? Pass. Even if I credit the whole bill for that month the customer still has that mindset. I am the customer and I am always right! No you are not. Sometimes it might be our fault if we forget to add u...

Maybe now we'll get good service?

Sprint offers awesome phones, I love the Sanyos you can get with Sprint.
Their coverage is comparable to T-Mobile but they allow you to roam on Verizon's network. So that gives you quite a bit of coverage in the states.
And the people that work the retail shops are great to interface with.
Sprint's problem is their customer support, technical support, etc. It's too disjointed. The left hand doesn't know what the right hands doing.
I've experienced this myself, I've experienced this with a sales rep. Their whole support system is to cumbersome and restrictive. There's nothing more frustrating than seeing a retail sales person wanting to help you but pretty much having their hands tied. And unfortunately Sprint is taking their loss out on...

Sprint will never compare to T-mobile

T-mobile compares to AT&T Network wise

Sprint compares to Verizon

that's like saying a Kia compares to a Honda but the Kia is almost as reliable as a Honda and we both know that's WRONG!
I have a feeling verizon doesn't want sprint.

YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!!!!!

I see everybody contradicting each other. The reason why Sprint is going down is because they give away cell phones to anybody with $150. Here in Jacksonville, FL anybody who puts down a $150 deposit can sign up for a 2 year contract. Sprint's customer base is mostly made up of people with really bad credit who stop making payments after they go over the minutes!!!!! All these losers don't pay and the company still runs these stupid manager's specials!!!!!!
oh thats neat i live in jacksonville,fl too
"I live in Jacksonville and anybody who puts down $150 can get a phone"
But seriously what does that have to do with anything If I had to pay $400 dollars with Verizon and $150 with Sprint who do you think will get my money? So I'm still confused, Wh...

My Condolences

I may not like Sprint but I still am a person that has Family and bills to pay. I work for AT&T and still this touches me. Anytime a company feels that by getting rid of employees and stores to cope for losses usually does not end up being very pretty. My sincere condolences for those of you out there that work for Sprint and I hope and pray that you might keep your jobs and if not that you might find other jobs. Remember you might consider crossing over into the blue.

On the other hand I feel this is the beginning of the end for Sprint. Cut back some times gain the added effect that was desired but it is rare.

they are still gonna lose money

wtf are these ppl thinking

Too Bad for Sprint

As a long time Sprint customer the comapany needs to do something different. My recent visit to a Sprint store to upgrade my PPC 6700 to a new device resulted in nothing but frustration.

When you are a long time customer with 3 personal phones and 5 business lines gets upset - you are going to lose business. I would think Sprint would do everything they could to keep me as a customer. Don't take advantage of me when I want to upgrage one phone. I felt like I was on a used car lot with a a bunch of twenty-something used car salesmen. I'm a business man want good service and some acknowldgement that I'm a significant customer. But I guess they don't care.

Sprint stock is down 25% in the last few days and they are ripe for a take...

To all the Sprint H8ers

Here's the real skinny about customer service: half of the reason why we do so poorly as a company has to do with our policies and half has to do with the way that our customers act. I know that I try to do everything possible to help my customers but sometimes the policies do not allow me to help. I have to transfer. I have to deny credit. It isn't that I don't want to help, it's that if I do, I'll have 27 different bosses jumping down my throat. The other half comes from our customers. They DO have an expectation of entitlement. I cannot do anything about that. I think we are going down the tubes.
customer service -- is the reason why that company is cutting its loses -- the way you talk to someone, and the way problems are handled are key to making money in the long run -- not out sourcing to some country where the ppl are already anti america...

story about a customer followed by interpretive dance (long)

cust was upset she got charged overages for mobile to mobile minutes, was told that we would cover entire bill for her that month AND had been treated poorly by some very ignorant reps (I ended up doing the exact same thing they were offering to do for her.)

Turns out her m2m was billed correctly in fact i spotted 2 days were she spoke a combine 200 minutes on just one line on (which was hers and she had had 2 lines with 750 minutes to share). she ended up accepting the fact she went over it cost her... $98 in overages. Great I won that arguement.

Now since nothing was invalid she was liable for the charges and the she had to pay it...

she was told we would cover her bill by another rep... wrong the rep stated we would cover h...

Word of mouth has done sprint in

Start treating your customer properly and maybe just maybe after a few years you can recover. Maybe
Oh mr customer your cancelling your service?!?!?? well let me give you an extra 700 minutes for free for 6 months if you extend your contract another year

Rofl some customer I switched to att said they offered them that.

Sprint is so freaking stupid. Here is exactly what they need...

1. Cross-Train their customer care.

If I get transfered 3-5 times every call I make to customer care, then I'm going to get mad. I'm going to tell my friend that Sprint sucks and Sprint will lose me, as well as potential customers. Cross-Training means less churn, less bad word of mouth, and most importantly, less call centers. If everyone can do almost everything for a customer, then you wont need 20 different numbers for specialized call centers.

2. BE UPFRONT ABOUT COSTS!

It's not lying for Sprint to charge customers extra for picture messaging even if they have a text plan, but when everyone else includes it, and they force you to get a vision plan instead, it comes off as sneaky. Same with upgrade fee's. Now, everyone else but ...
