Stanford researchers have found a way to use silicon nanowires to improve the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries by a factor of 10. The nanowires measure one-thousandth the thickness of a sheet of paper. As the nanowires are saturated with lithium, they expand to 4 times their original size and produce 10 times the electricity of today's batteries. The technology could power laptops for 20 hours, and drastically improve battery life in smaller devices such as mobile phones.

Now this will be revolutionary

Make no mistake about that.
I wonder how long we gotta wait for it!!!

20hrs of battery power for a laptop is awesome!!!
But when??? It would be nice not to have to carry around an extra battery, that's for sure.
...
and expensive i don't think this will be widely available for a long time
yeah i do agree to that but question is... is the price somewhat affordable for the masses? or is it also revolutionary? but anyway this will really ensure us that we'll be getting a much longer service from our gadgets so prices wouldn't really matte...

Finally battery life will improve with the rest of technology! Maybe GM will purchase the rights to this and close it down? 🤣

these new Li-ion batteries plus carbon nanotube capacitors

....are the real interesting story. IEEE fellows recently published a journal regarding their work on carbon nanotubes and there use in ultra capacitors. In addition, the transistor was just redesigned with new dielectrics so all of that wasted energy (heat) is not drained out through the gate. Once we start producing devices that combine all of these technologies, we will see laptops that can run on their battery for two weeks without a charge and run at much cooler temperatures.
I also remember hearing about a chip that was made that when heat was applied, produced electricity, and when electricity was applied, cooled down. Is this technology similar to what your speaking about?

Tesla Motors

Current Tesla Motors Roadster EPA range numbers:

230 mi EPA city
211 mi EPA highway
221 mi EPA combined (city/highway)

So, if the lithium ion battery in the Roadster could be extended then we would see:

2300 mi EPA city
2110 mi EPA highway
2210 mi EPA combined (city/highway)

Even if these numbers were halved we could shut OPEC down. Those scientists' lives are in serious jeopardy. It is good that they got the word out as soon as they did.
As others have pointed out in other threads, gasoline and diesel are just one of the many uses for petroleum. What do you think that keyboard you're typing on is made from?

Let's not forget power plants that run on oil will be using more to gener...

Anyone remember the EV1?

The thing was killed because it could only go 100 miles on a single charge, and it would take around 14 hours to charge it.

With these new battery's, it would go 1000 miles on a 14 hour charge? I think the fully electric car may live again!

That is, if the oil companies don't kill it off first, just like the EV1....
i love how people think oil companies are against alternative fuels. If every automobile in the world no longer ran on hydrocarbon based fuel, do you really think exploration and production would slow down one bit? I don't.

so if we put one

in a moto v3, it should extend a single charge to gosh, a FULL DAY? WOW!! AMAZING!!!!

this is good, but.............

please believe that this will cause the price of ALL lithium battery operated devices, to jump up on price. with dwindling technology comes dwindling prices. this has proven true over the years. we went from the Zach Morris brick to the razor. rememeber how much star-tec's used to be? with this update in tec. prices will be effected. what they neeed to do is stop slacking and make a battery that can power any object that has a wall plug. that way, it'll be really usefull. as it seems now, this will just power celll phones for a bit longer than normal. and thats cool. but we could use that same technology applied across the board. imagine if AAA batteries lasted 4 days on continuos play in a mp3 player or something. the need for unreplaceabl...

"people may get it effed up in thinking that since they got 10x the juice, they dont need to charge as often"

Erm, not to be offensive, but isn't that the point with this?

gettin laid keeps the mind off of your troubles...proven fact.

second, this will enable manufacturers to make phones smaller. Since a smaller battery can provide better juice, they can pack a bigger camera or more memory etc.

make sense?
