Nortel, Qualcomm Enable Dual-Mode CDMA/Wi-Fi Handoffs

Nortel and Qualcomm have tested technology that could allow mobile phones to seamlessly switch between CDMA and Wi-Fi networks during voice calls. The two companies tested a solution using Nortel's IMS-based Voice Call Continuity network solution and a Qualcomm chipset that uses an IMS/VCC client. The tests showed that calls can be successfully handed off between the two different types of networks in a manner similar to GSM-based UMA systems. This would let CDMA carriers offer customers services such as T-Mobile's Hotspot @Home. Nortel and Qualcomm expect to have the IMS/VCC network and devices ready by mid 2008.
