Government Threatens To Shut Down Sprint's iDEN Network

The FCC is threatening to shut down major parts of Sprint's iDEN network as portions of the 800 MHz spectrum it operates in interferes with public safety channels. The conflict between the iDEN network and public safety agencies was addressed years ago as Sprint was given new spectrum to move its iDEN network onto. Though the carrier has already spent $1 billion to move the network, the FCC says that progress is not moving according to schedule. The carrier estimates the relevant parts of the network serve nearly 20 million subscribers. Sprint has asked the Court of Appeals to help protect it against threats of a shutdown.

FCC shutting iDen Down

Very interesting. I have read several articles on this and it is inevitable. Sprint will have to migrate 1.3 million customers into its network, not to mention, have motorola build a new generation phone to handle the new frequency and figure how to integrate it in with their current network. This is going to take time and all when the company is in dire need of a CEO.
Do i think sprint will pull through, absolutely, but i also feel they will have to suffer losses to other carriers like tmobile, verizon and at&t. It is part of growing. Look what happens to the airlines when they grow to big...layoffs and cutbacks. Technology is an area we can afford to grow and expand in. This phase for sprint will be a good learning one for everyone...

Why Sprint has a poor customer service.....

Why Sprint has a poor customer service? well that is because sprint has divided its customer service on a large number of business outsourcing companies like etelecare, convergys, NCO, teletech etc wherein these companies couldn't get along with each other because each company has a different set of promotions to knock off each other as well as confuse their customers. i work in telesales and we are not even in good terms with customer care in another call center and they would usually throw promotions to customers that no sales rep could offer. same as for sales rep promising monthly discounts for customers wherein no customer care could comply. our system has a lot of work-arounds that agents can even sell services to those people that hav...

well said.. 😉 😉 😉
Why is CS an issue to talk about on this discussion, its about IDEN being threatened to be shut down. I like your post though, good points and I do agree, CS is being overhauled and the turnout so far is good from what I've experienced.
I know that the issue here is the iden network closing but that is only a small picture here. closing the iden network would be a big blow for sprint but i'm sure they will recover from that but as we look at the big picture customer service for sprin...

Terrorists

The reason as per the government that there are terrorists is because Sprint is using the 800mhz spectrum and not allowing the goberment under fearless leader to help fight them and protect our god fearing USofA. So they should just move off the spectrum and do whats best for our Homeland.

Only Sprint

Sprint... What a poor exuse for wireless service. Other then internet, they dont have much. And they are the only carrier I see that when customers call to cancel they offer them free this and free that just to stay. I wonder why they have the biggest churn rate out of all the companies...?!?!?
you are an idiot.. with no relevance behind your statements... SPRINT NEXTEL HAS THE MOST POWERFUL NETWORK AVAILABLE DOMESTICLY

ATT. to all bashing Sprint about this issue...

First of all let me say that, yes there are many issues with Sprint/Nextel that need to be fixed.

As far as cutting off the IDEN network (and someone already stated that it won't happen till 2012) they are implementing QChat which is the CDMA equivalent to IDEN. Sprint/Nextel is going to have to either move/upgrade all IDEN by 2012 to the QChat which will allow them to shut down IDEN.

Now for BOOST, the new Boost Unlimited phones are ALL CDMA!! SO, as far as they have seen, most of their chirp customers have already purchased new Boost Unlimited phones.

AND, you know our government is ****ed to all heck and slower than a snail running on a treadmill. You know Sprint/Nextel will get it appealed and keep it running till the IDEN co...

well well well...........................

isnt this lovely............if it aint the company you work for it is the freakin' government that we live in that is trying to screw things up !!!!!!!!!!! 🤣
Looks like Sprint’s is destined to fail…period.

They had over two years to make the transition for the IDEN to CDMA and they fumbled the ball, moreover they still signing people on IDEN…its this crazy or wh...

IDEN

Does this apply to Southern LINC? They also use IDEN? If not, why only NEXTEL?

Does MOTOROLA have any say so on this? MOTO invented IDEN.
Motorola has no say....Sprint owns the network. Motorola did not invent IDEN. Nextel Communications invented the network.

NEED better Handset Selection !!

What sprint need is more handsets from regular to iphone looking types; in that sense they need to steal a page from Verizon’s latest phone offerings; they may be the network with the most regulated UI but they do have selection galore of phones, I know plenty of friends that have come to them just because of their phone selection…some of them came from carriers that were cheaper…

In marketing you either have killer product so you can command whatever price you want or have mega advertising to make people believe you are top dog (Verizon and ATT respectively), Sprint got neither!!
I hope you are not talking about a better CDMA handset selection for iDEN customer transitions. CDMA handsets are light years ahead compared to any iDEN garbage available.

Its amazing how one killer app can keep this air interface alive.

Amazing

It's amazing to me how few are questioning the FCC. What a ridiculously dumb move they've made here. They've exposed themselves as not only idiots, but charlatains as well.

The FCC's J-O-B is to regulate our communications to ensure that our different technologies don't stomp on others.

How come no-one is asking them to DO THEIR FREAKING JOBS and make sure that they ACTUALLY REGULATE?

I mean, come on guys. Maybe if they'd spent a few more minutes looking at the proposals and leases of spectrum, they'd have seen the overlap????

FCC's at fault here guys, not Sprint. They shouldn't have allowed anyone else to use that spectrum.
Agreed! Wasn't this an issue when nextel first came about? If so, why wasn't it taken care of years before Sprint and Nextel merged?

This is coming from......

..... the same government that is taking forever and a day to move off the spectrum that T-Mobile has bought for 3G use. Sounds kind of hypocritical to me. Although it is kind of stupid for Sprint to continue to design and sell phones that are due to obsolete soon.

R
Thank you someone else here found the irony in this situation. Unless the Government is using the 800 MHz spectrum to replace their 1700 MHz spectrum that would be the reasoning behind this, but I highly doubt it because the former is only used for pu...
