Crown Castle Leases Away Modeo

A team of equity investors has signed a long term lease on Crown Castle's DVB-H spectrum, as well as the infrastructure of the company's New York test network, effectively ending the Modeo trial. Telcom Ventures and Columbia Capital will pay $13 million per year for the spectrum with rights to purchase or re-lease the spectrum from Crown Castle in 10 years. The equity partners have not announced what they will do with the spectrum. Crown Castle attempted to launch Modeo on its own after both Verizon and AT&T chose Qualcomm's MediaFLO for mobile TV, however efforts didn't advance beyond a New York City trial.

This is sad

I was part of a NYC test and I am very sad to see this happen. Modeo was a very cool service when associated to a cell phone or standalone device.

Hopefully some of Modeo's products will make it in Europe where DVB-H is the way to go.
