Sprint last week completed its first successful walkie talkie call between an iDEN and a CDMA phone. A spokeswoman has confirmed that test was an important advancement in Sprint's efforts to launch walkie talkie service using its Revision A CDMA network. The carrier intends to launch a service that both works like and is compatible with iDEN walkie talkie servies over its mobile broadband network in 2008.

yesss!!!

๐Ÿคค its about time. i been waiting to use my ready link but almost no one i know has it. Most people use direct connect. I cant wait!!!

Yeah, good luck with that. I'm pretty positive that the test was between QChat and Direct Connect.

Ready Link is dead.

The others are correct. ReadyLink is being phased out and the new PTT service will not be compatible with it.

Phonescoop Editors: Please use "DIRECT CONNECT", not "walkie-talkie"

To the editors of Phonescoop:

Even though Sprint itself is stupid enough to do it, please don't use the term "walkie talkie" to describe a nationwide & international direct connect radio system that has consistent sub-second connect times, can send photos, contacts, and voice to email, all at the touch of the PTT button.

Walkie-talkie is a close-range, handset-to-handset system. The iDEN PTT system (and now its imitators) are vastly more sophisticated and capable than the old radio shack walkie-talkie sets we had as kids.

Please give the former Nextel/Moto/iDEN PTT system the credit it deserves and use the term "direct connect", or at least PTT, but not the term "walkie talkie". Your readers & registrants deserve better.

Thank yo...

No. I think Phonescoop wants to be accurate. Sprint markets it as Walkie Talkie. Call it Walkie Talkie. Get off your high horse about Nextel. Nextel is dead. The company died a long time ago, and the brand just got killed off as well. It is simply Spr...

I am confused on what the point of sprint buying nextel actually was was except to gain their current customer base, which they are gradually losing anyway with the highest churn rate in the industry currently. So, sprint can and will eventually just...

very exciting!

Finally! I couldn't stand nextel any longer so i switched to sprint. The ability to use the walkie-talkie between is so great ๐Ÿ˜ but from what i have read/been told it seems it will still be quite some time before the Sprint PTT will match Nextel's. They mentioned Rev. A sprint does not have that widely deployed yet, and even with a year or so it will not cover the same area's as Nextel's. Hopefully they could make it so it could be used on each of sprint's platforms since it is IP based, if they make it usable on 1xRTT or 1xEV-Do rev. 0 so that even if it is not as fast you can still use it.... but still very exciting news. Way to go Sprint ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜
I highly doubt that you won't be able to use HPPTT outside of Rev. A data coverage. I would believe that Sprint would make it backwards compatible on Rev. 0 and even 1xRTT. It's like the Sprint Music Store, it was not an available feature on any phone...

Off Network??

Anyone know if these handsets are going to have the 5 mile off network walkie-talkie like Nextel phones? Yeah they have the PTT feature through the iDEN network, but also have the 5 mile built in walkie to accommodate that.
All of the new Nextel phones (iDEN & hybrid) now have this feature, so I would assume future phones will as well.

What I would like to see is the ability to use this feature in conjunction with phone calls. Since the hybrid phones use two separate ...

Direct Connect is so 20th Century

Great accomplishment...it only took 2 years after the merger to finally get a "test call" to work.

Who really wants to press a button every time they want to talk? Why not just press talk once and use the free mobile 2 mobile that is included with every sprint plan (except affiliate markets).

Just my 2 wooden pennies.
You are not thinking about the value of PTT to certain individuals, mostly large companies. For the average Joe it may not be important but for a company with a large workforce with teams that need to be able to communicate instantly without having to...

Sprint... you are forgetting 1 thing... WHAT MADE DIRECT CONNECT A HIT IS...............

EVERY Nextel phone had Direct Connect. There was no split userbase. In order for QChat to be a success, they would need to make sure that EVERY phone released after QChat's launch has it built in. Good luck getting Moto, Samsung, Sanyo, LG & Pantech to hop aboard that train together.
You're absolutely right. That would be the smart move for Sprint IMO.

What makes you think that's not their exact plan?

It shouldn't be that hard.

Sprint has enough leverage to do that. To the manufacturers, they are the customer.

Perhaps ...
