Apple has announced the iPhone will have longer battery than initially expected, with talk time increased to 8 hours and media playback times enhanced as well. The company also announced the front surface has been upgraded to a durable, scratch-proof glass, similar to what Motorola uses on several of its flagship phones. Today Apple announced the phone will launch with a new YouTube application as well, furthering its ties to Google. Over 10,000 videos will be available in H.264 format for playback on the iPhone (as well as Apple TV) at launch, and Apple claims every YouTube video will be available from the application by year's end.

Still no 3G

YouTube is nice and all, but I still think releasing a $600 cell phone with Edge is a little silly. Of course, I'm not their target audience. I'm sure they will sell out on hype alone.

What choice did they have? ATT/Cingular's 3G coverage is still not good. ☚ī¸

EDGE sucks, but at...

hahahahahaha.. no 3g + playing you tube = crappy streaming and a crappy phone browser. enjoy the phone
...
Ive been seeing the IPhone commercials and the videos look good off of youtube.
...
Who cares about 3G compatibility? I'll just connect wirelessly when I want to crank down big files and/or Youtube vids. Besides, wireless connectivity is far more pervasive than 3G.

Find something meaningful to whine about.

Where's the...

...bottle opener? I thought the big spec update would announce that they also put a bottle opener on it. Bummer đŸ˜ĸ
unless maybe apple will sell a bottle opener as an aftermarket accessory for the dock port ;)

That has got to be the strangest feature I've ever seen on a phone.

my own opinion

i wrote my own take on the iphone here on the phone scoop blog:

i think we're all losing sight of who this phone is really for. it's not for those of us who want the latest and greatest of every feature.

when does iphone get its own phonescoop page????

eric or rich...when r u putting that bad boy up?
Maybe when the phones is released and a reviewer will actually be able to get their hands on one.

Apple: "Let someone get a phone early so they can review it? What kind of idiocy is that?"

h.264?

Anyone tried reading a description of this video compression codec? Feels like my brain's going to ignite.
It's part of QuickTime and results in great quality video.

8hrs Talk time

Yeah right I Like to see that one. 😈
its possible. But who ISNT going to use all of the functions of that phone. Good luck keeping your phone charged without hookin it up to a car charger during the day.
i don't think a single phone out there meets its manufacturer's claimed talk time. it's under ideal conditions. but if apple's claim is an overestimate to the same degree (not too huge) that most manufacturers are, then it's still pretty impressive.

Tests done on 1900 Mhz Band

from iphone tech specs page

Talk Time: Testing conducted by Apple in May and June 2007 using preproduction iPhones and software. All talk time testing was done connected to a 1900MHz network. All settings were default except: Call Forwarding was turned on; the WiFi feature Ask to Join Networks was turned off. Battery life depends on the cellular network, location, signal strength, feature configuration, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPhone units; actual results may vary.
