BlackBerry Service Briefly Goes Down

Research In Motion's wireless BlackBerry email service crashed Tuesday evening across the entire Western Hemisphere. BlackBerry did not provide any details concerning the reason behind the crash, but was working to slowly restore service gradually Wednesday morning. The system failure began at 8 PM Tuesday. RIM said it will bring the system back online in steps in order to prevent a glut of backlogged messages from overwhelming the system again. RIM recently reported that it added another million customers to its ranks, with a total of 8 million users of the service.
