In what appears to be the first large-scale trial in the U.S., more than 200 HSBC employees loaded their credit card information onto their mobile phones via ViVOtech's over-the-air process with the intent to test contactless payment systems through near field communications (NFC). The NFC equipped phones will allow the employees to make contactless payments at some 36,000 retail locations around the world served by MasterCard's PayPass program. For purchases of less than $25, customers can tap their phones to the PayPass reader and make instant payments that don't require a signature.
