The spec for a new USB designed with the needs of mobile phones in mind was completed today. The USB Implementers Forum announced the Micro-USB connector standard. The connector is not only smaller than Mini USB to accommodate shrinking phone designs, it is also more durable. The sleeve of Micro-USB connectors will be made of stainless steel and the connector has hooks that will help keep the device securely connected. Micro-USB supports regular transfer as well as On-The-Go connectivity for hooking phones to printers and other peripherals. No phones have been announced with new connector yet, however Nokia was named as an interested party by the USB-IF.
