Cingular 3G In Most Of 100 Largest Cities

Cingular today announced it has launched 3G in 160 markets across the US. This exceeds Cingular's predictions a year ago that they would cover 100 markets by the end of 2006. According to the carrier this includes most of the 100 largest cities in the US, including Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York, Seattle, San Francisco. However the carrier has not made a full list of upgraded cities available, and their coverage map does not allow you to see 3G coverage until you have zoomed in to view a specific city. We were able to determine that there is still no 3G coverage in Los Angeles. Although it has been confirmed the carrier will upgrade their HSDPA to 7.2 Mbbps speeds, Cingular has not announced future plans for their 3G network, including any further rollout plans or additional services / upgrades they will make.

Nokia N95 For Cingular

Could someone tell me if cingular plan to release N95
And the answer is: Nope.

Phones that are that ahead of the curve are simply not carried by any U.S. carrier. Look at all the previous really nice phones that Nokia has done: any carriers pick those up? The N75 would be the first, if it actually g...

Why is Cingular so obtuse about their 3G coverage

It seems to me that if Cingular has made such good progress, why can't they have a single nationwide map showing 3G coverage. Their coverage maps only show coverage at the city level, forcing you to look at each city you care about. It smells of making it seem much better then it really is. I know for a fact that there is no coverage in S California or in St Louis. Last I heard, at least one of those 2 was in the top 100. Its the same kind of fluff as their "fewest dropped calls campaign".

On the plus side, it does seem like a great network given the speeds and the ability to have voice and data at same time. They have also done a tremendous job of introducing new smartphones. I will seriously consider switching a year from now whe...

FACT: Cingular has had 3G coverage in Saint Louis since November 2.

I am currently using a LG CU500 and a Samsung BlackJack with absolutely no problems.

Next time check your facts before posting.

Let me explain that a bit:

I'm totally confused by this as well. I work for Cingular, and there is loads of information available, but none of it easy to navigate. The basic reason for this relates to how big the company is and how the management...

Totally amazing!!!

I think it's amazing...and pretty sad that anytime there is an article stating that Cingular is launching or is having success in something there is a horde of trolls that line up to piss on Cingular's success. The number 1 sign of a business' success is the amount of pissy enemies with sore butts that it has made.
Amen brother. Well put.

Yep, LA is up and running along with CT!

He's right, I was just in LA and San Diego on business. My Blackjack got 3G speed from the Mexican border to north of San Diego, but I drove straight through LA with nothing but Edge. Makes me consider dumping the Blackjack for a Treo 700w with real ...

7.2 mbps for Cingular

What is the real story of cingular upgrading its network to 7.2 mbps. I need true information on this. I plan to buy pcmcia card next week. If cingular plan to upgrade its network, I will wait for the upgrade before I buy.

160? I only count 137..

I only count 137 cities here, and these are cities not markets because many of these cities fall in the same market as others in the list. Way to cheat your way to the top again Cingular. I'll be sticking with my Sprint high speed, thanks!

Alabama
Birmingham
Arkansas
Little Rock
Arizona
Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Tucson
California
Arden-Arcade, Bakersfield, Berkeley, Chula Vista, Daly City, Escondido, Fairfield, Fremont, Fresno, Hayward, Modesto, Oakland, Oceanside, Richmond, Roseville, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Clara, Stockton, Sunnyvale, Vallejo
Connecticut
Bridgeport
Delaware
Wilmington
District of Columbia
Washington...

If you look at Sprints list, they have done the exact same thing. However, they call each city a metropolitan area.

Additionally, what they don't tell you is how crappy their 3G services work. I've complained to them vehemently about four cities where I continue to have major connectivity problems (Tempe, Boston, Austin and Houston), and basically their response is...

still trying to understand......

how it is that Cingular is going to jump from UMTS to HSDPA without the dust settling on them getting to 3g. whats the rush?
yeah im not totally understanding where they are going with this either.... 😕
Actually AT&T Launched UMTS pre-merger. With competition from EV-DO, Cingular has to make up for lost time.
Since they decided to roll out 3G services, they've said they would launch HSDPA alongside of UMTS.

The reason of course is faster speeds, but they had to upgrade to UMTS to have access to HSDPA as it's an upgrade in itself.

The rush is, they'...

largest cities?

well still here in Minneapolis/St.Paul, no 3G. And every other little town has it. Great, ill wait till 2007 when T-Mobile has it first.
We don't have 3G in Denver either. They were saying sometime in 2007. At this point Tmobile might release 3G before Cingular here.
Well, don't feel bad. I live in Washington, DC (Glover Park) and we have 3G, but the coverage is so spotty that I put my phone (LG CU500) in 2G only mode. Otherwise, it keeps dropping calls when it switches from 3G to 2G. Even if that were a phone ...

Twin cities are slated for Q12007, towers are in place and they are in testing phases in that market
