Nokia Introduces New Personal Network Protocol

Nokia Research in cooperation with wireless chip manufacturer Broadcom and others has developed a new standard to allow small devices to communicate with each other over short distances. Wibree is a low power wireless protocol that can transmit at up to 1 Mbps at distances of up to 10 meters. It is not designed as a replacement for Bluetooth, but as a complement to it. Sports sensors, input devices and other light data peripherals like watches can use a tiny dedicated Wibree radio to communicate with a mobile device, which can use a combination Bluetooth / Wibree chip for maximum personal networking options. The Wibree specification is under review and should be complete in the second half of 2007.

HOW so?

How does this exactly compliment bluetooth? You might as well just USE bluetooth in these situations where you need a "low power short distance wireless protocol".

Why not use Zigbee?

..sounds like an attempt to push out zigbee and bluetooth in favor of a protocol/hardware of which its interlectual property can be controlled and capitalized upon.

Go figure.
