Symbian Updates OS For Faster Data, Cheaper Phones

Symbian today announced version 9.3 of the operating system that powers the majority of smartphones around the world. Symbian is the core that both S60 and UIQ run on. The newest version adds new features aimed at advancing the platform both at the high and low ends. Symbian 9.3 now includes support for Wi-Fi, and HSDPA for faster data transfers, as well as Push To Talk over Cellular (PoC). The latest version of S60 and UIQ both include support for Wi-Fi, however those were added on by the interface developers, not by Symbian. Version 9.3 also supports UMA to make the most of its new support for Wi-Fi and cellular networks. For manufacturers looking to bring Symbian to lower priced phones, version 9.3 will now allow them to rip out parts of the OS not used in their phones. This will allow the manufacturers to run Symbian with less memory, reducing the cost of the slimmed-down handsets. The latest versions of S60 and UIQ currently run Symbian 9.1.
