Emergency Alerts Coming To Phones

FEMA today will demonstrate an advanced Emergency Broadcast System that will send alerts to mobile phones and websites as well as the traditional TV and radio broadcasts. During an emergency, the system will not only notify local broadcast stations, but can now notify satellite radio and tv networks, websites and wireless carriers. The system sends a message to carriers which they will then forward to subscribers in the area warning them there is an emergency and advising them to seek more information from a tv or radio station. The system has been tested since 2004 in Washington and is now running on 23 public broadcasting stations around the US. The Department of Homeland Security expects the system to be fully operational across the country by the end of next year, with a priority getting it running inGulf states this year. There is no word on if the system will eventually be able to send out information and instructions to cell phones instead of just an warning to tune into a broadcast.

Another Way for Us to HAve to Spend More Money

I wonder.....

1. Do you think that we will have to pay an extra tax on this service....(i.e the 911 tax...when the GPS location network is not even running at all 911 call centers)? I cant wait to pay more in taxes for services i dont really want...(i know there is a storm coming when i look outside...or hey go on the web from my phone and check the weather.)

2. I think these alerts are going to come as text messages....so will i be charge for this text message....even if i never really wanted it....and even if i am on a text messaging plan...will it count as a message...???

i wonder????

Good thing i make millions of dollars and really dont care how much my phone bill costs.
Good thing! 😉

Good thing I make millions of pesos! 😁
Why is it that people are always sooo cynical? We are talking about public safety here!!!! When bad things happen people turn to the government to make things right. Now the government is trying to help people get out of harms way in the event of a...

I'm pretty sure that if a txt message was sent to your phone from the carrier that it would be free of charge. Just like if you have automatic bill payment and something doesn't go through you are sent a txt message from the carrier to remind you.

hey the 911 thing would have been fine if it worked....but 80% or more of the country it does not work.....so we are paying for a service that could not be provided and that is what is going to happen with this new text thing....

so a small company...
