Sprint Launching Four Phones in July With Backup

Sprint tonight showed off four new handsets the carrier will launch in the coming month. Each of the entry-level to midrange handsets has a the ability to backup and restore contacts over the network. Sprint is expected to launch this feature in all upcoming handsets, including a raft of EV-DO handsets expected soon. None of today's phones have EV-DO high speed data or any other high end features except Bluetooth.

  • Samsung A640: Clamshell with internal antenna and a hidden external OLED display. Features include VGA camera, Bluetooth, Ready Link Push To Talk, PCS Vision 1xRTT data, and the option of a simplified high-contrast main menu for the elderly or vision impaired. Available today.
  • Sanyo Katana: A thin, RAZR-esque clamshell available in four colors. There's a bright QVGA screen inside, and a second color display outside. Features include VGA camera, Bluetooth (including DUN), PCS Vision 1xRTT data, and speakerphone. Launches July 10.
  • Sanyo 2400: A clamshell with an extendable antenna. Has the same form and features as the Sanyo 3100 except without the camera. Has Ready Link Push To Talk and PCS Vision as well as speakerphone. Available today.
  • Samsung A420: An entry-level clamshell with internal antenna. Features a color display, speakerphone, and text messaging. Launches mid-July.
