Cingular Rolls Back "National" UMTS Rollout

Cingular has notified its national resellers that it will reverse its current policy of allowing 3G (UMTS) phones to be sold in 2G (EDGE) areas. Both of Cingular's UMTS phones allow users to access Cingular Video and other 3G services using the EDGE network when the 3G network is not available. Users in many areas have been disappointed by the performance of video over EDGE, which reportedly hasn't provided much of a boost over GPRS speeds in many regions. Cingular is asking all national resellers to return their stock of 3G handsets until it launches 3G nationwide a second time in October. At that time Cingular should have 3G in significantly more metro areas. Cingular is also allowing any customer who already purchased a 3G phone to return their handset until June 30th.

T-Mobile phones will soon display a new icon in the status bar to indicate when they are connected to 5G in a higher frequency band that offers faster data speeds. The icon will appear first on the newest iPhones, and the company is working with phone makers "to include this update on as many devices as possible".

Boost Mobile has introduced the Celero5G, a white-label affordable 5G phone with a unique launch promotion attached. Like T-Mobile's REVVL V+ 5G, the Celero5G is manufactured by Wingtech and powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset, (but the two phones differ in size and specs.) The Celero5G has a 6.5-inch display, 4,000 mAh battery, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB storage, expandable by up to 2 TB.

I doubt that performance is the issue...

I have used Cingular Video in many different Edge areas and its been fine. I think the real reason is Off-Network Data roaming fees Cingular is eating with these phones. A customer can use a huge amount of data in a small space of time.

See that doesnt ake sense to me.... Cingular owns ALOT of it's advertised network (thanks to the purchase of ATT wireless).

Who is running this company? They can't seem to do anything right. I'm hoping the rumors i hear of Telephia suing them for their current fewest dropped call ad campaign are true as well. What a patheticly run corporation.

The fewest dropped calls claim is not Cingular making the claim it is a consumer reports company making the claim.
