Bush Administration Proposes Taxing Unlicensed Spectrum (Updated)

In its 2007 budget proposal, the Bush Administration has included a vaguely worded proposal to tax unlicensed spectrum. Claiming that service providers are taking advantage of unlicensed spectrum to avoid licensing fees, the item suggests "user fees" on "un-auctioned" spectrum could raise $3.5 billion by 2010. However there is no clarification on what that fee would be or if manufacturers or end users would pay it. Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi operate in unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum. Many cordless phones operate in this same band or unlicensed 900 Mhz or 5.8 GHz spectrum. Separately the Bush Administration also predicted spectrum auctions could bring in $25 billion by the end of the decade as well. Update: According to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the administration has no intention to tax unlicensed spectrum technologies such as Bluetooth, cordless phones and especially Wi-Fi. Instead the technologies the administration was referring to in their proposal are satellite companies, taxi dispatch services and other industrial uses that have taken advantage of the free bands.

Aren't phones taxed enough as it is?

Anti-Christ.... no, but the next dictator... maybe.

You know he had wet dreams being called "King George"

When that happens I will turn in my visa and go home to a reasonable monarchy. Her Majesty at least has some sence.

Taxes

This wouldn't be a tax on carriers, it would be a tax on the PUBLIC bands, they have just gone and called them 'unlicensed' to make it sound like they were missing licensing. What it would mean is taxation of cordless phones, home networking equipment, and other items YOU use for free now, in order to push you toward the already 'licensed' carriers' services, so ol' George can snoop on your conversations more easily.

If your communications go through unlicensed routers, he can't snoop, right?

Everything good must end

And that includes whatever good thing you're currently getting for free. Except breathing. I don't think they can tax breathing. When they do, look out.
once the air becomes like the water supply and people prefer brething out of bottles, then it will be taxed

tax and spend republicans strike again

What ever can we do with these tax and spend republicans. As if its not bad enough that they are destroying the US economy with their debt, support for outsourcing, destruction of the value of the dollar (low....interest rates), payola corporate welfare and corporate welfare "defense" contracts now they want to scew the wireless industry.

Tax and spend republicans, they're killing the nation.
