Varioptic last week announced that liquid lenses are now available for manufacturers to use in cameraphones. The Arctic 320 is a zoom and auto-focus lens, but has no moving parts. Instead a small current warps liquid trapped inside two lenses to change the distance them and adjust focus or zoom. Philips announced a similar lens 2 years ago, but Varioptic claims to have made further advances in durability, miniaturization and power consumption with the help of Samsung. No one has committed to the Arctic lens yet, but Varioptic will be at 3GSM next week, it is possible a handset partner could be announced then or shortly after.
