Sprint Invests In Wireless Broadband / Mobile TV Technology

Sprint Nextel today announced it will invest an additional $10 million dollars in IPWireless, a company developing equipment for a high speed wireless data standard called UMTS TD-CDMA. This standard will be in competition for next generation wireless data networks with WiMax and others that Sprint has also invested in and trialed. After a $4 million investment this summer, Sprint is currently in trials with IPWireless's technology in Washington DC on its 2.5 GHz spectrum there. IPWireless intends to offer services including a mobile TV solution, in addition to high speed wireless data. Sprint will also trial this new service, called TDtv, which IPWireless intends to roll out in Japan and Europe as well.

As part of its quarterly earnings report today, T-Mobile provided an update on its 5G rollout and Sprint customer migration. The company's faster "Ultra Capacity" 5G network — the bulk of which relies on 2.5 GHz mid-band radio frequencies — now covers 140 million people and is on track to cover 200 million by the end of 2021.

T-Mobile Maps its Expanded High-Speed 5G Coverage

As T-Mobile continues to expand its 5G network, PCMag reports that the company has updated its coverage maps to differentiate between its faster "Ultra Capacity" 5G and its slower but more widely-available "Extended Range" 5G. T-Mobile's 5G Ultra Capacity network uses a mid-band frequency (2.5 GHz, AKA band 41, which was inherited from Sprint) that offers faster data speeds than most sub-6 GHz 5G, and much better coverage than mmWave 5G.

Cricket made two major changes to its prepaid plans today, bringing them in line with the competition in two important ways. First, Cricket is removing the cap of 8 Mbps on 4G LTE download speeds.

WiMax, Flarion, UMTS TD-CDMA...

I think Sprint is trialing all of the above. Last I heard they were still a member of the WiMax forum. Of course they're tight w/QCOM. I beleive Nextel trialed Flarion (in N.C.) prior the merger and QCOM's acquistion of Flarion.

Looks like Sprint is trying to keep bets on most all horses in the 4G race.

ME2! So many acronyms to keep straight lol. Hopefully it turns out to be one clean winner. I don't want a repeat of the beta vs VHS days in the world of Wireless! We alreadymight have one of those on our hands with blu ray vs hd dvd!
