Nortel, Option Reach HSDPA Speed Limit

Tests in France have finally reached HSDPA maximum data speed of 3.6 Mbps. The tests used Nortel base stations and a new PC data card from Option to make the connection. HSDPA base stations on Cingular and other soon-to-be-launched networks are already capable of this speed, known as category 6, however there have not been any mobile devices - handsets of data cards - that could match it. This is why Cingular and other networks have launched claiming a maximum speed of 1.8 Mbps. Although Option's Globe Trotter 3G/EDGE and Fusion+ cards will be upgradeable to HSDPA with a software update, they do not use the chipset necessary to reach 3.6 Mbps. Nortel also participated in a separate test in Japan that demonstrated simultaneous use of 3G, WiMax and Wi-Fi to support a number of different calls and applications at once.
