Sony Ericsson Embraces Low End

A Sony Ericsson product manager recently revealed the company was looking to expand their handset lineup. Sony Ericsson will create more mid- to low- range devices. The company says they will stay away from the cheap developing nations handsets like ones recently announced by Nokia and Motorola, but will fill out their mid range with more than just the J300. Separately, Sony Ericsson's new North American president acknowledged the company's core strength was high end multimedia features, and they will continue products that play to that in addition to new low end models.

Embraces Low end?

Is this really news for Sony Ericsson?
I mean granted, the W series looks awsome, and the s710/s700 is a seriously great phone, but most everything they have been putting out has been lower-end. A good number of people have complained to me, at my store, about the poor features or quality of thier phone. Its not uncommon to see a lower end sony ericsson in thier hand.
Ericsson was always struggling until sony came along to help. If I was in charge of the company, I would drop Ericsson from the name. Weather you like sony or not, many customers know the name and flock to it. Also, I would focus on mid or high end phones. Much like sony's electronics are mid and high end. Many Years ago sony did have its own lineup of phones.... they didn't do to well and quickly left the market. Thats part of why they ate up ericsson. Ericsson is a very innovative company, just not so good with execution. They are afterall the father...

If their low end phones sell enough...

... they may take the chance on bringing out more high-end phones in North America. I'd sell my roommate for a w800a.
