NTT DoCoMo, Sharp and Waseda University have developed a new standard that can speed up Infrared (IR) communication 4 to 10 times. IR Simple is a new protocol that uses existing hardware but increases transfer times by improving efficiency of the data transfer and decreasing idle times. Since it uses the same hardware, IR Simple is backwards compatible and could be added to existing mobile devices with a firmware update. While Bluetooth has replaced IR in the West, IR is still the dominant mobile network technology in Japan, where it is used to beam photos, business cards, and other information.
