HTC Wizard Approved by FCC

The FCC this week approved a new Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC device from HTC code-named Wizard. The device appears similar to the "Blue Angel" device currently available from Cingular as the Siemens SX66, except the bottom slides out sideways, allowing for a much larger keyboard. Like the Blue Angel, the Wizard has a large touch-screen and supports GSM 850 and 1900, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The camera has been upgraded to 1.3 megapixels with an LED flash. Three versions are shown, including one with more conservative styling and one without a camera. Several photos clearly show a key with a T-Zones logo, (a T-Mobile brand,) although it is not clear if the phone will be picked up by T-Mobile USA or T-Mobile Europe. HTC devices are generally offered under other brands, such as XDA, MDA, Qtek, and i-Mate in Europe, and Siemens, Audiovox, or carrier-branded in the US.

How long after FCC approval do phones usually come out?

What would you guess for this one?
It really varies. It can be one month or six. I've seen even longer, although it's not too common. But to say the average is 3-4 months doesn't tell you much - it really does vary quite a bit.

That thing looks so much like a Sidekick.

Makes you wonder....

But, not with a Pocket PC OS, I guess.

I wonder if T-Mobile is going to tell Danger to take a hike.
No way! They would not tell Danger to leave for something like this. Danger is really a Pop Culture kinda device. THis is most likely for business use.

GSM 850/1900

If this device is going to rum off of 850/1900 wouldn't that make it for t-mobile usa's network and not tmobile Europe. 😎
The Blue Angel was quad-band so they could sell the same device to all carriers worldwide. I assume they'll do the same with this one. The FCC documents don't specify; the FCC only cares about US bands. Sometimes FCC docs mention Euro band in the foot...

Sliding keyboards seem 2 b da big thing now on mobile devices.

I have notice a lot of cellular phone manufactures are using the sliding keyboard form factor now. I wonder if this form factor could some day replace the traditional flip design.

I good feature the sliding design has over the flip is, user can operate the device even when it is close. Also there is no need for a caller id display on the outside the device which can reduce manufacture costs.
Yep. Another big advantage of sliders (well, regular ones, not sideways ones like this) is that they're easy to open with one hand; much easier than most clamshells.

The downside is that the display is exposed and not protected from scratches. And ...

So I would have to guess that the moment you slide the keyboard out, the PDA is (hopefully) smart enough to automatically switch to Landscape display mode. It would be pretty dumb if you had to make that switch manually.

As with other first-generat...

Windows Mobile 5.0

Just thought I'd that this device will almost definitely have Windows Mobile 5.0. Of course that just makes sense given the timing, but it's pretty much verified by the clearly-visible softkeys for both landscape and portrait modes. Softkeys are new for Pocket PC with 5.0.
