CTIA Wants More Testing of In-Flight Calling

The CTIA, in a filing yesterday, urged the FCC not to relax restrictions on in-flight cellular calling yet. The FCC has recently been seeking comments on plans to relax or change rules regarding wireless device use on aircraft. It's not airline safety the CTIA fears for, but the safety of its members' networks. The CTIA would like the FCC to hold off on changing or removing its rules until it can be shown that in-flight calls will not interfere normal operation of traditional cellular networks. The CTIA points out that most testing of airborne cellular systems has been of their effect on avionics, little has been done to measure their effect on terrestrial cellular networks.

The FCC has proposed new rules for wireless telecom carriers to require best practices for authenticating customers who are attempting to move service to a new phone or new carrier. The rules are an attempt to crack down on SIM swap fraud and port-out fraud, where a bad actor impersonates a wireless customer in order to take over their phone number.

C-Band 5G Launches Delayed until Next Year

AT&T and Verizon have agreed to an FAA request to delay the launch of 5G in new C-Band radio frequencies by one month, while potential interference issues are addressed, reports the Wall Street Journal. Both companies were planning to launch the highly-anticipated mid-band 5G service on or around December 5th, but will now launch the service no sooner than January 5th, 2022.

Thats bogus man!

testing testing, how would it affect current towers on the ground? This makes know sense to me. I can't wait for the day I can use my silly onboard aircraft.

the ctia wasn't the only one to file papers with the FCC yesterday. it must have been deadline day, because a few hours ago, everyone's filings became news.

the DHS and FBI don't want us to be able to make calls from planes because they're afraid it might help terrorists coordinate an attack or detonate bombs. i admit i initially thought this was absurd, short range radios like wifi, bluetooth or even a simple remote control could also be used by a passenger to detonate a bomb in the cargo hold. then i realized that a cellular triggered bomb could be smuggled aboard a plane, and a terrorist, safely on the ground, could call the bomb and detonate...
