Handoff

(Handover)

In wireless mobile phone systems, the process of transferring a phone call in progress from one base station (tower) to another base station, without interruption of the call or data session.

Many phones and networks are also capable of performing handoffs between different technologies. For example, a 3G (WCDMA) call might be handed off to 2G (GSM) tower in the middle of the call, if the 3G signal became too weak.
