Moto V180 frequencies?

Kieran

I'm an ATT gsm customer, looking to get a new phone and migrate to full-cingular status...

The cingular web site claims that the moto v180 "operates on 850/900/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS networks".

That doesn't sound right to me... 850, 900, and 1900? Without 1800? Is that correct? Isn't that strange?

What am I going to be missing if I don't have 1800? I do go to Europe on occasion (maybe more, my sister may be moving there) and will be going to Australia this summer. I'd like a global phone without spending a fortune.

Thanks,
Kieran

Okay, thanks for the tips on the 551, but I can't afford it right now ($99 for a current ATT customer vs. free for the v180)

So, any comments on my questions about the V180????

Thanks!

The V180 is technically quad-band hardware, but it is sold by Motorola to carriers with whatever bands they want (and want to pay for). Extra bands mean more testing and tweaking, which costs money.

So your V180 is only certified for the bands it was sold for, and those bands are locked into the firmware.

As for what those three bands will get you, 850/900/1900 is a great combination for a Cingular customer who travels overseas occasionally. 900 is a much better band to have than 1800. You should be fine.

But if you want to double-check, check out this site for info about which networks use which bands in which countries:

According to a Motorola rep I spoke with,
Cingular is going to quad band for the v180 and the v220, so if you can hold on for a little bit, you should be fine.
