For removing the rubber covers you should recommend using something smaller and pointy like a thumb tack.

doesn't that void most manufacturer warranties? That's what our repair center says... 😕

If you have any problems with your phone, you can put the old faceplate back on and bring the phone back to Verizon store, they can not tell if it was open or not if you do a decent job. Same goes for other Carriers.
