Yeah I wouldn't fire one if someone just handed me one, but I feel confident enough to make one and fire it. Checking the barrel afterwords would be a good idea and if you ran one in too tight of a choke, pressure becomes a legitmate concern...but, with low brass bird shot I just don't see how you could blow up your gun. I've loaded low-brass bulk ammo (winchester/federal 100 rd value pack ammo, specifically) with random stuff and I've never had any problems. Haven't tried waxers yet, messy and too much work. If you tried it with high brass, or 3" high brass especially you're really taking a way bigger gamble.
I still think they're pointless. If you want to just mess around and play mad scientist, I guess whatever. but the only reason guys came up with crap like this is because slugs didn't exist yet. Now we have slugs. I'll stick with factory ammo if I want to shoot a slug out of a shotgun.
